Open data for evolutionary synthesis: an introduction to the NESCent collection

چکیده
Many of the historic turning points in the history of evolutionary science are examples of ‘synthetic research’, in which new knowledge was generated through the integration of existing data, methods, results and concepts. This tradition goes back to Darwin’s famously multifaceted case for evolution by natural selection in The Origin of Species, the reconciliation of Mendelian and statistical genetics by R.A. Fisher, and the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis of the mid20th century that brought together population genetics, paleontology and other schools of evolutionary theory.

The 2006 NESCent Phyloinformatics Hackathon: A Field Report
In December, 2006, a group of 26 software developers from some of the most widely used life science programming toolkits and phylogenetic software projects converged on Durham, North Carolina, for a Phyloinformatics Hackathon, an intense fi ve-day collaborative software coding event sponsored by the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). The goal was to help researchers to integrate ...

In recent years, there has been an explosion in the popularity of hackathons — creative, participant-driven meetings at which software developers gather for an intensive bout of programming, often organized in teams. Hackathons have tangible and intangible outcomes, such as code, excitement, learning, networking, and so on, whose relative merits are unclear. For example, a frequent complaint is...

متن کاملPhenotype Ontology Research Coordination Network meeting report: creating a community network for comparing and leveraging phenotype-genotype knowledge across species
Representing phenotype in a way that can be linked to thousands of molecular genetic and environmental databases is an unresolved research challenge. A recent meeting of the Phenotype Research Coordination Network (RCN) aimed to coordinate and leverage current efforts. The three day summit meeting was hosted by NESCent (The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center) in Durham, North Carolina on th...
